Bohle Wetlands
The Bohle Wetlands Landcare site is located at the end of Mesa Circuit, adjacent to the Cosgrove Estate and the Bohle River. It is upstream from the Woolcock Street bridge and is part of a much larger wetland system.
History of this site
Many people have worked in this area over the years with a focus on removing invasive weeds and planting native trees to bring it back to its healthy natural state. Local scout groups, the Parkside Group, Conservation Volunteers Australia, Townsville City Council, TAFE groups and local residents have all contributed, but despite prior revegetation works undertaken, it requires constant work to keep invasive weeds at bay.
Current work
In 2019, Coastal Dry Tropics Landcare Inc. secured a National Landcare Program Environment Small Grant to undertake invasive weed work on a 12.9 hectare site. This was complemented by the planting of 500 new trees using species native to the site.
Crews from Conservation Volunteers Australia have helped in the weed removal and tree planting preparation, and the Parkside Group installed a path around the main site and two bench seats for locals to enjoy the vista. Our ongoing monthly volunteer days will continue watering and weeding to ensure that the new plantings survive and thrive.
